Scratch Louie, Call Her Lucy

After reading this little bit of information on Wikipedia (next paragraph), we now think that Louie is not a male turtle, but actually a female. She seems to have yellow irises and a higher-domed, rounder shell. We are not experts, but we are enthusiastic learners.

American Box Turtle: 90% of the time, male box turtles have red or orange irises while the female has brown or yellow ones. Also, the female has a tendency to have a higher-domed, rounder upper-shell, while the male has a lower shell with more of an oval or oblong appearance.

Lucy has been a lot of fun for us to watch. The kids call her by name, it is so cute. Lucy is not going to stay with us forever. Soon, we will take her to a more turtle friendly habitat.
